Approximately 230 miles in extreme 41 degrees plus!
22.08.2015 41 °C
This is our penultimate day today.
We left the Casino resort in Laughlin, Nevada, at 0810 this morning and the temperatures were already in the upper 20’s! So we were in T shirts from the start. We managed to stay off of the interstates for most of the day but in some stretches the Route 66 road surface was atrocious. There were signs stating “Bad road surface for 10 miles” and they weren’t kidding. We went to look and there were bumps, gouges and pot holes!!!! So to be safe we went on the main roads and avoided these stretches.
After we rode from Nevada into California, our first stop was the recommended Ludlow café shop. We went inside only to find tables full of food and flies and a poor welcome. We sat down the waitress just pushed the menus onto the table and walked away without saying a word. We took an executive decision and walked out to the garage across the road and splashed out on a bottle of diet Mountain Dew. We certainly know how to live!
We had stunning driving for most of the day crossing another stretch of the Mohave Desert. This section was the World War II training ground for the U S troops where General Patton prepared his men for their North Africa battles. The temperatures here we the hottest that we have ever ridden in, there were no signs but it was hotter than the desert crossing yesterday probably in the low 40’s!! We’ve certainly drunk some water on this trip. The water today became so warm we’ve drunk tea and coffee cooler!!!
Our next stop was 3 miles from Calico ghost town where we stopped for lunch. Then we continued onto Calico and were pleasantly surprised, it was restored and interesting to walk around. It originated in 1881 as a silver mining town housing 2,500 people. When silver dropped from $1.31 an ounce to $0.63 an ounce in 1907 people left in droves and it fell into disrepair. In 1966 the town was donated to San Bernardino County and was restored to what we can see now.
From Calico we made our way through Barstow on Route 66 to our stop for the night in Victorville, California. Sand has done our last wash (clothing that is………) so we are set for the rest of our holiday.
