Chicago to Springfield IL

200 miles on this day

sunny 26 °C

We arrived at Eagle Rider by taxi at 0905 this morning. Unfortunately 2 Germans were in front of us so by the time we processed our paperwork we didn't leave until 1035. But hey ho in real terms that's nothing!! We had a photo shoot to see us starting Route 66 but very shortle we got too hot and packed our jackets in the top box and rode in shirt sleeves. this temperature was in excess of 28 degrees.

We meandered along the old route 66 and I55 finally arriving at Dixi's Diner at McCleanes. This is the 1st ever truck stop along the route and has been restored. We had to diet cokes (yes... diet cokes!!!) and took the photo.. We continued onto Springfiels, our destination, at 1640 hours and 200 miles later.

On wandering out we found the Chesepeke steak and fish food restaurant and had as much as you could eat and drink for less than $50. We had some bread brought to us as a starter and it was a small loaf!!! We need building up after a long day on the road but we don't need weighing down!!! We tried our best but had to leave some..............

The day has settled down now so we are writing this in our room with a customary Jacks & coke.

Chicago

2nd full day

rain 30 °C

We spent the day walking.

We walked along the shore line of Lake Michigan which is almost the size of England! We ended up in Lincoln Park zoo which is privately owned with free admission. We spent almost 3 hours walking around the animals and then walked back.

Walking back we ran the gauntlet of thunder and rain due to the intense heat (low 30's) taking shelter under scaffolding and shops along the way once we got off the beach. The storms here run through quickly so we didn't get too wet.

Anyway re recovered at the hotel sitting outside with blue skies and sunshine running up a bar bill of $70. It has to be done................

You'll see the fire station photo this is outside of our room so we have heard then during the nights!!! Not as bad though as the building site in New York.

I have telephoned Eagle Rider and we collect our Harley Davidson Electra Glide This morning (Tuesday) to start the Route 66 journey.

Chicago

1st full day

overcast 26 °C

Weather cloudy but warm, mid 20's.

The city is still as beautiful as we remembered from our last visit in 2003. Navy Pier (https://navypier.com/) is one of the main attractions which during our last visit we spent many happy hours in Charley's Ale House. Which, alas, no longer exists. The atmosphere of the per has dramatically changed, it all fast food and gift shops aimed towards young families.

The food here remains the same, good but huge portions. We shared the smallest pizza from Giordanos (https://giordanos.com/) the best pizza restaurant in Chicago, as you can see, it's huge.

The hotel is well placed allowing us to walk everywhere

1st Visit to Chicago

Raddisson Blue Aqua Hotel

We arrived in Chicago late yesterday afternoon after fighting through the traffic from the airport by taxi. A silver lining though, he forgot to put the meter on until 2/3 way into the journey so we struck a deal. It only cost us $40 and we were travelling for almost an hour!

The hotel is great, huge room with every amenity you can imagine. Only one problem, the laundry as advertised is a laundry service. It will cost us in excess of $150 to do our washing. We can replace our cloths cheaper............. mmmmmm perhaps that's the idea!

We only brought enough clothing for 6 days as that's all we can comfortably pack in the bike so we were relying on a laundry at various stages of our trip. Oh well we'll manage.

The weather here is cloudy but in the mid 20's.

We plan to wander, eat and drink today.

New York

1st Visit

DSCN0280.jpgDSCN0281.jpgArrived into New York and the Night Hotel times Square. Blue skies and 30 degrees. Our hotel is just off of Times Square and walking distance to everywhere.

The room is very small but it would be ok EXCEPT there is a building site right next door and they have been working from 0600 to 2200!!! Even today (Saturday) they started at 0700!

This was to be our return hotel after the ride but we have cancelled it to Courtyard by Marriott in Midtown.

On the brighter side we spent most of yesterday afternoon in Central Park, relaxing with a glass of wine (or 2) watching the world go by at the Boat House restaurant and bar. On our way back we met some wild life.....

We fly onto Chicago later this afternoon.
